How Zoca Listings Ranks the Best Businesses

Our Top 3, Top 5 and Top 10 lists are ranked by an editorial completeness score — not paid placement and not invented star ratings. Here's exactly what goes into the order.

Why we don't use star ratings

Most directories rank businesses by star ratings and review counts. Those signals are easy to game, slow to accumulate for newer businesses, and often say more about a company's marketing than the quality of a haircut or a facial. Rather than invent ratings we can't stand behind, Zoca Listings ranks by something we can measure honestly for every business: how complete and bookable its profile is.

The editorial completeness score

Every business on a "Top" list is ordered by a deterministic score built from real listing data:

  • Direct online booking — the strongest signal. If you can book the business on its own website in a couple of clicks, that's genuinely more useful than a phone-tag listing.
  • Service-profile depth — businesses that describe what they actually do, in their own words, rank above bare name-and-address stubs.
  • Contact completeness — a listed phone number and email round out a trustworthy profile.
  • Real local price data — where our Beauty Price Index has verified menu prices for that service in that city, the listing carries citable substance.
  • Recency of verification — more recently confirmed listings rank slightly higher.
  • The score is computed the same way on every build, so the order is reproducible and explainable — there's no black box and no human thumb on the scale.

    What the score is not

  • It is not paid placement. Businesses cannot buy a higher rank.
  • It is not a quality or safety rating. A high completeness score means a business presents a thorough, bookable profile — always check a provider's own site, licensing and reviews before booking.
  • It is not based on invented stars or scraped reviews.
  • Supply-gated lists

We only publish a "Top 10" where a city genuinely has ten or more listed businesses in that category — and the same for Top 5 and Top 3. If a city only has four nail salons listed, you won't see a padded "Top 10" backed by four names. That keeps every list honest.

    Booking is always direct

Whichever business you choose, you book on the provider's own website. Zoca Listings never sits between you and the business, and there are no booking fees.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a business pay to rank higher on Zoca Listings?
No. Ranking is determined entirely by the editorial completeness score, which is computed from real profile data. We do not sell placement on any Top 3, Top 5 or Top 10 list.
Why doesn't Zoca Listings show star ratings?
Star ratings are easy to manipulate and disadvantage newer businesses. Instead we rank by profile completeness and direct bookability — signals we can measure honestly and consistently for every business — and we encourage you to check each provider's own reviews before booking.
How often are the rankings updated?
Rankings are recomputed each time the directory is rebuilt from the latest verified business data, so newly completed profiles and freshly added businesses are reflected quickly.
Why is there no Top 10 for my city?
We only publish a tier when a city has enough listed businesses to fill it honestly — ten or more for a Top 10, five for a Top 5, three for a Top 3. Smaller cities will show the largest tier their real supply supports.
